Ingredients
Complete Ingredient List
For the Baklava Layers
- 1 package phyllo dough (about 16 oz)
- 1 cup unsalted butter, melted
For the Nut Filling
- 2 cups walnuts, finely chopped
- 1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
- 2 tsp ground cinnamon
- ¼ tsp ground cloves
For the Honey Syrup
- 1 cup honey
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 1 tsp orange zest (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Nut Filling
- Finely chop walnuts and pistachios or pulse them in a food processor.
- Mix in cinnamon and ground cloves for a warm, aromatic flavor.
- Set aside while preparing the phyllo dough.
Tip: Lightly toast the nuts in a dry pan for 3-5 minutes to enhance their flavor!
Step 2: Prepare the Phyllo Dough
- Thaw phyllo dough according to package instructions (keep covered with a damp towel to prevent drying out).
- Brush a baking dish (9×13 inches) with melted butter to prevent sticking.
Caution: Phyllo dough is delicate! Handle it gently and keep it covered while working to avoid it becoming brittle.
Step 3: Assemble the Baklava Layers
- Lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the dish and brush with melted butter. Repeat this step for 8-10 sheets.
- Sprinkle a thin layer of nut filling evenly over the phyllo.
- Add another 5-6 sheets of phyllo, brushing each layer with butter.
- Repeat the nut filling and layering process until all ingredients are used, finishing with 10 layers of phyllo on top.
Tip: For an extra crispy texture, use thin, even layers of butter between sheets!
Step 4: Cut & Bake the Baklava
- Using a sharp knife, cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes before baking.
- Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45-50 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
Tip: Cutting before baking ensures clean edges and even syrup absorption.
Step 5: Make & Pour the Syrup
- While the baklava bakes, heat honey, sugar, water, lemon juice, and orange zest in a saucepan.
- Simmer for 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Once the baklava is out of the oven, immediately pour the cooled syrup over the hot baklava.
